Hacker Holds AMD GPU Source Code Ransom for $100 Million

XboxSeriesX_Tech_SoC_Closeup_3q4_MKT_wBrand_16x9_RGBAMD revealed that a hacker has stolen files that contain the source code for AMD Navi 10, Navi 21, and Arden Arden GPU. The Arden is the rumored 12 teraflops powerhouse GPU in the upcoming Xbox Series X. The hacker, who calls herself xxXsoullessXxx,  demands $100 million for the files and threatens to release all the files if not paid. They released portions on GitHub and AMD quickly responded with a copyright claim to get them removed; giving them legitimacy.

In December 2019, we were contacted by someone who claimed to have test files related to a subset of our current and future graphics products, some of which were recently posted online, but have since been taken down.

While we are aware the perpetrator has additional files that have not been made public, we believe the stolen graphics IP is not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products. We are not aware of the perpetrator possessing any other AMD IP.

We are working closely with law enforcement officials and other experts as a part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

  • AMD Statement on Theft of Graphics IP

53863A_AMD_E_Wh_RGBAccording to TorrentFreak, who was able to contact the hacker, the hacker has not been contacted by AMD yet and assumes that they will simply sue her in court. The fact that TorrentFreak and other sources have been able to reach out to xxXsoullessXxx shows that her identity is not as secret as one would expect.

We will discuss this and our opinions on the morality of the situation in the next episode of the podcast.
